The Flight to Kona

Today started around 3:50, well closer to 2:00am for me. I was lying in bed when I heard Dad making coffee, indicating it was time to get up. Vicki was also awake so we woke up the dog and got dressed. Dad handed us a couple cups for coffee for the road and we headed out the door. The morning was stressful for Iris but I understand she relaxed within a few hours.

At the Redmond airport we were able to rearrange our seating from two window seats (on the opposite sides of the plane) to ones next to each other. The morning commute from Redmond to Seattle went as expected other then a 15 minute “maintenance” delay while in the airplane in Redmond. We grabbed breakfast at a Chili’s restaurant in Sea-Tac and boarded for our flight to Kona. After a 40 minute “maintenance” delay our plane took off. Finally. We are sitting in the last row of the plane, next to the bathroom. Oh well, at least we are sitting together.

Vicki and I both watched movies on our iPads to entertain ourselves during the flight. She watched the Kings Speech (looks boring) and I watched 127 Hours. That is about the guy that got his armed jammed between a boulder and a rock wall, then had to cut it off with a pocket knife. The whole movie was uncomfortable for me because jumping around in a canyon and climbing around boulders hits too close to home for me. The whole movie was intense, then the guy breaks the bone in his arm and begins to cut the arm off. He is bleeding profusely, screaming in searing pain and the music soundtrack is screeching. Meanwhile the plane is experiencing a heavy bout of turbulence. Shortly after this guy cuts his arm off, I realize that I am in a minor state of shock and am experiencing a nauseating sense of dehydration. I paused the movie and took my headphones off in dire need of some water. I flagged down the flight attendant and downed three cups of water. Vicki said that color returned to my face after that.
