D’oh! We Made it to Homer

D’oh! We Made it to Homer

Homer is such a nice surprise. The town is super cute. One book describes it as an interesting meld of artsy community and the fishing industry. Also, we didn’t expect the mountains on the other side of the bay, which makes amazing views. We are staying in a campsite at the end of the spit that juts into the bay. The campground isn’t great but I’m looking out the window of the Casita to a beautiful blue sky, calm blue bay waters and several fishing boats.

We saw a whale pretty close to shore while we were walking on the beach. That was cool. Iris was dying to chase the seagulls on our walk, perhaps a bad habit that we taught her in Oregon but it sure is fun to watch. Since we were warned about eagles snatching little dogs for dinner, we kept her on a tight leash. She can chase the birds when we’re back in Oregon.

I should note the lesson we learned last night. We accidentally left the iPad charging off of the Casita battery while kayaking yesterday. At 2:00 am, we learned that the battery was totally drained, when the frig lights blinked and the carbon monoxide detector beeped a low battery warning. Luckily, there was virtually no one in the campground (unlike here-we’re packed in like sardines). Mike ran the truck for about 10 minutes, and we turned off everything we could. That lasted until about 7:00 am when we were making coffee and were notified of the low battery again.

That wasn’t the only drama last night. Kayaking takes a lot out of Iris. She was sleeping before we all went to bed. About 1-2 hours after falling asleep, I was awoken by a dog in my face. We don’t know what she wanted, maybe she was cold, but when I repeatedly told her to go back to bed, she laid down on my pillow instead. We’re pretty sure that, in her world, she was giving me the finger. Rude, and completely against the rules. It’s a good thing she’s a small dog and can be physically moved. We don’t know what bee got into her bonnet last night except that she was overly tired and cranky. Today has been much better.
